The Giving Spirit of a Child

One of Raleigh’s younger citizens has started what she hopes will be a new trend in birthday parties and philanthropy. For her 11th birthday, Maya True Wasik decided that she was going to make a difference for some of her peers, even the peers that she may not know. When planning her party with her mom Suzan, Maya decided that she really didn’t need any gifts. She had heard about the Me Fine Foundation from a thrift drive held by her neighbors, and wanted to help the same kids and families that Me Fine helps. Maya wanted to have her party, but in lieu of gifts, she told the attendees to bring gift cards for Me Fine. To ensure her party was a success, Suzy even had Maya’s “instructions” on the party invitations.

Maya’s charitable plan helped raise hundreds of dollars worth of gas cards, Target/WalMart gift cards and even some cash donations. And at her word, Maya gave them all to Me Fine. She even went so far as to decorate a box to deliver them in. Maya hopes her idea will catch on, and that other kids will consider doing the same thing for their birthdays.

Me Fine is built on the strength and wisdom of children. We are honored by Maya’s giving nature and humbled by the qualities that have been instilled in her by her family. We’ve always relied on the belief of our supporters to fund our work and if the future is up to folks like Maya True, Me Fine and the rest of our community are in great hands.

If you’d like to organize a birthday party like Maya’s to donate to Me Fine, we’d love to help. Email: info@mefinefoundation.org.
