Me Fine Foundation: Outfitting superkids, one cape at a time
As executive director of the Me Fine Foundation, which helps kids facing critical and chronic illnesses, and a dad of a young son with spina bifida, Joey Powell knows well the joy that comes from putting a smile on those kids faces.
The kids that Powell works with through the local nonprofit often spend months in the hospital or suffer through regular treatments that can be uncomfortable and even painful. They need to be able to celebrate their own moments. They also just need to be a kid. Continue reading
A Closet Full of Learning Experiences
I enjoy short, weekend trips. They give me a chance to explore new cities, sites and my favorite, local restaurants! (Yep, it’s really all about the food.) I’m really excited about an upcoming trip with some of my oldest friends. Our mission is to allow our teenaged daughters to get to know each other better and more importantly, give them an opportunity to get to know our “younger selves” through the eyes of our friends. I expect a few embarrassing stories to surface, but I’m sure my girls will enjoy meeting their once-very-interesting, 20-something mom. I’m loading up on ammunition in the event one of those stories happens to wander out of my closet.

The Giving Spirit of a Child
One of Raleigh’s younger citizens has started what she hopes will be a new trend in birthday parties and philanthropy. For her 11th birthday, Maya True Wasik decided that she was going to make a difference for some of her peers, even the peers that she may not know. When planning her party with her mom Suzan, Maya decided that she really didn’t need any gifts. She had heard about the Me Fine Foundation from a thrift drive held by her neighbors, and wanted to help the same kids and families that Me Fine helps. Continue reading
Surviving Ain’t Easy
Sometimes it hits me broad side, with full-force. I’ve been through a lot. I mean, I know it in my conscious mind, but I don’t think it registers in my daily thought process. Probably, if the impact of some of the events had a chance to be absorbed, I would likely resemble jelly: unstable and wiggly.

2014 Me Fine Gala is Foundation’s Most Successful Fundraiser to Date
Raleigh, N.C. (October 28th, 2014)- The Me Fine Foundation is proud to announce that they raised over $100,000 at their annual gala held at Marbles Kids Museum on October 17th, 2014. The Me Fine Gala presented by Centrifuge Media, was a night of celebration featuring casino gaming, fun and prizes, topped off by the presentation of the “Hero for Life” award. The gala serves as the non-profit’s annual signature fundraiser, to provide financial assistance and emotional support programs to parents and caregivers whose children are receiving long term medical treatment from Duke and UNC Children’s Hospitals.
The “Hero for Life” award is the Me Fine Foundations’s highest honor, designed to recognize those who go above and beyond to help critically ill kids and families, specifically Me Fine Foundation’s mission. This year’s award was presented to childhood cancer advocate and Me Fine Foundation board member Diane Moore. Moore, who lost her daughter Colleen to cancer, has spent years of her life volunteering and advocating for childhood cancer patients and their families.
“What an amazing night; I can’t thank Centrifuge Media and our other sponsors enough for their involvement. The outpouring of generosity from those in attendance was equally as impressive. I’m so glad we were able to recognize Diane for her work, and to do so at such an unbelievable evening, “ said Joey Powell, Executive Director of the Me Fine Foundation.
The Me Fine Foundation provides hope via financial assistance and emotional support, to parents and caregivers whose children are receiving long term medical treatment in Duke and UNC Children’s Hospitals. Parking, gas, food and other living expenses not directly associated with medical care can mount and create hardships. Me Fine Foundation, Inc. acts a stopgap providing funds to the families during the treatment process to help ease financial pressure. In addition, the Foundation funds emotional support programs administered by the hospitals, to help lessen the psychological burden of children and their families as they endure treatment.
