Thank you so much! Me Fine serves hundreds of children and families each year, and we couldn’t do it without community team members like you. Me Fine delivers support to our families as they need it, and our volunteer opportunities reflect that focus.
Below you’ll find a list of some ways you can plug in to our work. These are created with our service model in mind. Each are designed to help our families directly or to help fund our mission..
In-kind donations from the community are one of the most important components of Me Fine’s support for children and families facing critical illness. Needs include: baby items, gas cards, and a variety of toys, games, and art supplies to keep kids entertained during their hospital stay.
Good for: Small groups (2-10 people), large groups (10+ people)
Help Me Fine’s mission by gathering gently-used clothing and household items for our thrift store, Second Hope Shop. Want to make a bigger impact? Coordinate a neighborhood drive by posting on social apps like NextDoor or your neighborhood email listserv. Thrift Drives are a great way to involve your work team, civic or religious group, and other groups of people. The Second Hope Shop team can even come pick up your group’s donation. (For pickup inquiries, please contact Second Hope Shop Manager, Mary Angel Bastin.)

Help Pack Toys for Delivery to Hospitals
You can help ensure that a child has a cuddly doll to hold during surgery, and that an in-patient teen has a wide selection of games to keep his mind engaged and spirits high. Me Fine makes regular deliveries of toys to our partner hospitals, and we need teams of volunteers to help us pack boxes for delivery. Volunteer shifts typically last 2 hours and are held at our storage unit in Durham. Email Meredith Izlar for more information.

Volunteer at Me Fine Event
Each year Me Fine hosts two major fundraisers, Music for Me Fine and the Me Fine Gala. These events contribute significantly to the organization’s annual revenues and are vital to our ability to meet increasing requests for assistance. Duties for event volunteers range from planning, staging, solicitation of auction items, promotion, and execution at the event itself.
Additionally, we can use a few pairs of capable and willing hands at third-party/partner events throughout the year. If you’ve ever been a part of a fundraising event before, this might be an opportunity for you!
Good for: Individuals, small groups (2-10 people)
Assemble Craft Kits
One of Me Fine’s nonprofit partners, Arts for Life, delivers art instruction to children undergoing treatment at Duke Children’s Health Center. The projects serve not only as a distraction from the rigors of the child’s treatment protocol, but they provide a creative outlet for patients. From Arts for Life: “Our educational art programs in visual arts, creative writing, and music decrease patient stress and anxiety, keep patients active and engaged, and help families cope with the realities of illness during the most difficult times of their lives. They turn hospital rooms into artist studios where children can focus on building a tile mosaic, writing a poem, or crafting a song—not on the pricks, pokes, and treatments they’re about to receive.”
Some of these projects require pre-assembly (tracing, cutting out shapes, hole-punching) before they can be used by patients. Me Fine will deliver supplies and instructions needed based on the date/time that works best for your group. You then get everyone together and start crafting! Contact us for more information.

Create NICU Care Packages
Me Fine provides care packages for the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) at our partner hospitals. These gifts include various essentials that families/caregivers need when they have a little one who is born prematurely or arrives needing extra medical care.
Your group will be given a list of needed items and quantities for the NICU care packages. You can raise funds as a group to purchase items in bulk or hold a drive for items from the list. Me Fine will help with any ancillary needs. Then, gather your group and celebrate while you assemble some help for our neighbors in the NICU!
Good for: large groups (10+ people)
*Please note: Me Fine is grateful for your group’s financial and hands-on support with this project. By providing the items needed, your group’s impact extends beyond the NICU, as we are able to redirect funds that would otherwise go to purchasing these supplies to other areas of need.
There are occasionally other opportunities that Me Fine may require volunteer support. If you’d like to be made aware of those projects as they become available, please email us here.
Due to HIPAA, hospital policies, and our own confidentiality practices, Me Fine does not typically offer opportunities to engage with the children and families we serve. Also, in compliance with the safety protocols of our hospital partners, Me Fine cannot serve as a conduit for groups who wish to perform a service project within the hospital.
Due to Me Fine’s staff priorities and limited organizational bandwidth, we cannot accommodate all volunteer groups who may wish to work with us. Additionally, preference will be given to volunteer groups that are able to fund their desired projects.
If the opportunities listed above don’t fit what you’re looking for, please consider lending your time and talents to one of our peer organizations:
